Cuban Rumba & Guaguancó in Basel
Our Cuban Rumba / Guaguancó classes at Golem Academy take place every Thursday at 8:30 PM in Basel.
No previous experience or partner is required.
Cuban Rumba has been recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2026. UNESCO described it as “an expression of self-esteem and resistance” — and that phrase explains what this class is about far better than any description of steps ever could.
What is Cuban Rumba?
It was born in the working-class neighbourhoods of Havana and Matanzas, in solares and around the ports, among communities descended from enslaved Africans.
It isn't a ballroom dance that made its way into the streets. It's exactly the opposite.
And it isn't just a dance. Rumba is, at the same time, singing, percussion, movement, and a very specific form of body language.
The instruments came from whatever was available: packing crates before drums.
The Three Styles
Guaguancó
This is the style we work on in this class. It is danced in pairs and revolves around a specific interaction: the vacunao, the gesture used by the man to mark, and the tapao, with which the woman avoids it.
It's not choreography. It's a conversation with rules.
Columbia
The fastest and most athletic style. It is danced solo.
Yambú
The oldest and slowest style, where gesture matters more than speed.
What will you learn?
The step and the body
Rumba isn't danced with the weight held low or with the same posture used in Casino. Before working on any figures, we focus on body placement and grounding.
The Vacunao and Tapao
The heart of Guaguancó: how to mark it, how to avoid it, when it works and when it crosses the line.
We work on it slowly and with awareness, because it is a game that requires both dancers to understand the rules.
The Conversation with the Quinto
In Rumba, the drum follows the dancer and responds to them. Learning how to provoke that response and react to it is what separates dancing Rumba from simply doing Rumba steps.
The Context
What is being sung, where each element comes from, and why it exists.
Without this context, the vacunao can seem like a strange gesture. With it, you understand what is actually being expressed.
What will you take away?
You will dance Salsa better.
The posture and way of using the floor developed here transfer directly to Casino and are among the things that can transform a flat-looking dance very quickly.
Your dancing won't depend on your partner.
Guaguancó is danced in pairs, but each dancer has their own role and space. There are no partner figures that you simply have to memorise together.
You will understand Cuban music from the ground up.
Rumba is the root. After spending time with it, you begin to recognise what lies underneath many other Cuban styles.
What level can I start from?
From zero.
You don't need a background in Salsa or any other dance style to learn Guaguancó.
If you already dance Casino, be prepared for the Rumba posture: it is different, and the first few weeks are dedicated precisely to developing it.
Do I need to come with a partner?
No. It is not necessary to come with a partner.
